First-time event welcomes nearly 140 residents and connects families with community partners, resources, and hands-on activities

AKRON, Ohio — August 17, 2026 — The Akron Metropolitan Housing Authority (AMHA) welcomed approximately 139 residents to Cascade Village on Wednesday, August 12, for its first Touch-A-Truck community event, bringing families, neighbors and community partners together for an afternoon of fun, exploration and connection.
The event offered children and families an opportunity to get an up-close look at vehicles and equipment while enjoying activities designed to create a welcoming and engaging experience for residents. More importantly, the event provided an opportunity for AMHA residents to connect directly with local organizations and learn more about resources and services available throughout the community.

Community partners participating in the event included the Akron Urban League, Greenleaf Family Center, Summit County Department of Job and Family Services, Summit County Public Health, and Akron-Summit County Public Library.

For AMHA, the event represents more than an afternoon of activities. It reflects the agency’s continued commitment to creating opportunities for residents to build relationships, access resources and feel connected to the broader community.

“At AMHA, we know that strong communities are built through relationships, trust and meaningful opportunities to connect,” said Herman L. Hill, Executive Director of the Akron Metropolitan Housing Authority. “Our first Touch-A-Truck event at Cascade Village was a wonderful example of what can happen when residents, staff and community partners come together. Seeing so many families participate and enjoy the day was incredibly rewarding, and we are grateful to every partner who helped us create a positive experience for our residents.”

The strong turnout also provided AMHA with another opportunity to engage with Cascade Village residents and continue strengthening relationships within the community.

“We want our residents to know that AMHA is not simply a housing provider, we are a partner in the communities we serve,” Hill added. “Events like this give us an opportunity to meet families where they are, create positive experiences for children and connect residents with organizations that can support them and their families.”

AMHA extends its appreciation to the community partners, staff and residents whose participation helped make the inaugural event a success.

Following the positive response to this year’s event, AMHA looks forward to continuing to identify creative ways to bring residents, community organizations and resources together throughout its communities.
