Portability
Overview
Portability means a family can move from one Housing Authority to another using a Housing Choice Voucher. You can use your voucher anywhere in the U. S. that has a tenant-based voucher program.

How Housing Authorities Work Together
Usually, there are two Housing Authorities involved:
- Initial Housing Authority: the Housing Authority that gave you your voucher.
- Receiving Housing Authority: They may:
- Manage your voucher and bill the Initial Housing Authority (called administering or billing), or
- Add you to their own program (called absorbing)

They will confirm they received your file and schedule a meeting with you. If you do not hear from them within 20 business days, you should contact them to start the process.
The Receiving Housing Authority will notify AMHA
The Receiving Housing Authority will notify AMHA once your HAP contract is done and whether they will bill AMHA or absorb your voucher into their program.
